Training Program on Real Life Evaluation Methodology

Course Objective : To provide professionals with knowledge and skills in designing and managing useful evaluations in programming environments that, as in real life, do not meet conditions for rigorous evaluation methodologies.
Expected Learning Outcome:
At the end of the course, the participants will be
i.   Aware of the scientifically robust and not so robust evaluation designs.
ii.  Able to identify constraints that operate in real life against the application of the most robust evaluation designs.
iii.   Able to develop the optimal evaluation design under existing constraints.Â
Participants : Professionals in the Government, NGOs, INGOs, and UN agencies who are engaged in or plan to engage in planning, monitoring and evaluating development programmes.
Course Content and methodology: This course presents the real life evaluation methodology developed by Jim Rugh and Michael Bamburger which provide a basis for determining the evaluation design under constraints of data, budgets, time, etc. It uses materials and reviews from workshops conducted by the authors of the method in discussion.
The training approach will consist of :
- Presentations using powerpoint and other audio visuals including a training video by the authors of the method.
- Analysis by participants of real life cases brought by participants selected prior to the training to identify constraints operating against robust evaluation designs.
- Participants identifying optimal designs that suit the existing constraints of budget, time, data etc.
- Role play and peer critique of evaluation designs developed by participants.
The training will be participant activity focused with approximately 60% of time allocated to group and individual learning activities.
In addition, there will be a session on a currently internationally discussed topic in the field of evaluation. This will be by an invited speaker of international repute.Â
